Why Pinterest GIFs Save as Still Images (and How to Download the Animation)

You right-click a looping pin, choose "Save image as…", open the file, and nothing moves. Or you use a downloader and receive an .mp4 when you expected a .gif. Both outcomes have the same root: what moves on the Pinterest page is not always the file your browser saves.

This guide explains the three causes, then shows how to get the animated file from a single pin and from a whole board of your own. The examples use PinBoardSaver, a board downloader for Pinterest that runs as a Chrome extension and also has a free online tool for single pins.

Why the saved file does not move

1. You saved the thumbnail, not the animation. Pinterest keeps every image pin in several copies: resized thumbnails for feeds and boards, plus the original upload. For a GIF pin the original is the .gif, while the resized thumbnails are usually still pictures. "Save image as…" saves whatever element is under the pointer, and in a feed or on a board that is often a thumbnail.

2. The pin is a video, not a GIF. Many short loops on Pinterest were uploaded as video. There is no GIF file behind them, so saving the image gives you the cover frame. The real media is a video file.

3. The file is fine, but the app shows one frame. Not every app plays GIFs. macOS Preview, for example, opens a GIF as a list of separate frames. Drag the file into a browser tab: if it moves there, the download worked.

How to download one animated pin

1. Open the pin on its own page (the address looks like pinterest.com/pin/1234567890/) and copy the URL from the address bar.
2. Open the online pin downloader, paste the link into the field and press "Search". The button becomes active once the verification widget under the field has finished.
3. A card with the pin's picture and title appears. Press "Download pin". If the button is gray for a moment, the verification is refreshing.
4. Check the extension of the saved file before you do anything else with it.

The tool does not convert anything; it hands over the file Pinterest has for that pin. If the pin's data contains a video, you get that MP4. Otherwise you get the pin's original image with the extension it has on Pinterest's servers, so a pin that Pinterest stores as a GIF should arrive as a .gif. The file is named after the pin's title.

The online tool is free and rate-limited (a few requests per minute and a daily cap), so it suits single pins, not collections.

GIF or MP4: read the file extension

Do not rename an .mp4 to .gif. Renaming changes the label, not the format, and many apps will then fail to play the file. Download the GIFs from a whole board

For a board of motion references, saving pins one at a time is slow. The extension takes the board in one pass.

1. Install the PinBoardSaver Chrome extension and open your board in Chrome.
2. Click the PinBoardSaver icon in the toolbar. The panel shows the board with "All Pins" already ticked and one checkbox per section.
3. Press "Start Download" and wait for the "ZIP Ready!" screen.
4. Press "Download to Device" to save the ZIP.
5. Unzip it and sort the folder by file type: .gif files are the animations, .mp4 files are video pins.

Here is what happens to a GIF pin on this path. The extension reads each pin's record from the board data Pinterest sends to your browser. When a pin's original file ends in .gif, it always saves that original instead of a resized copy, on the free plan too, so the animation is kept. Video pins are saved as MP4 when Pinterest provides an MP4 file.

The panel has no filter by media type, so the ZIP also contains the board's still images; sorting by extension takes a few seconds. Inside the ZIP, each section of the board is a folder, and pins outside sections sit in the root next to 0_info.txt (board name, URL, owner, date and pin counts). Every file is named {number}_{pin name}_{pin ID} plus its extension.

The free plan saves 20 pins per download; "Select Pins Manually" lets you choose which 20, and Premium removes the cap. One caveat for animated pins: "Select Pins Manually" builds each file from the thumbnail shown on the page, so when Pinterest shows a still thumbnail for a GIF, you get that still. For GIFs, use "Start Download". If the animated pins are scattered across a large board of yours, move them into one board section on Pinterest, untick "All Pins" and tick only that section; the free 20 then come from that section.

Keep the source with the file

The number at the end of each file name is the pin ID. Put it after https://www.pinterest.com/pin/ and you are back at the original pin and its creator, which helps when you need to credit someone or ask for permission months later.

Downloading a GIF does not give you the right to republish it. Treat saved animations as private reference unless the license or the creator allows more; the common cases are explained in using images saved from Pinterest.

Why did my Pinterest GIF download as an MP4?

Because the pin was uploaded as a video. A short silent loop looks like a GIF, but there is no GIF file behind it, and a downloader can only return the file that exists.

How do I save a Pinterest GIF on an iPhone?

The Chrome extension is desktop-only, but the online tool works in Safari. In the Pinterest app, open the pin, tap the share icon and copy the link, then follow the single-pin steps above. If the short pin.it link is not recognized, open it in Safari first and copy the full address. By default, Safari puts the download in the Files app, in the Downloads folder. How do I convert the MP4 to a GIF?

Any video-to-GIF converter works. Keep the MP4 as your master file and convert once: GIF is limited to 256 colors, and every extra conversion costs quality. Lower the frame rate and the width to keep the size reasonable. With the free command-line tool FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i clip.mp4 -vf "fps=12,scale=480:-1" clip.gif.

The file ends in .gif but still does not move. Is it broken?

Usually not. Open it in a browser tab. If it plays there, the app you used before simply shows the first frame. Check the destination too: some chat, document and slide tools flatten GIFs or play them only in presentation mode.

Does Pinterest have its own download button?

For some pins, yes: the "…" menu on a pin has a "Download image" item. Pinterest's help page notes that not all Pins can be downloaded. If the item is missing, or it gives you a still, use the steps above.
