A link is the obvious move and the one that goes wrong. A public board does open for someone without an account, but Pinterest keeps asking them to sign up while they browse, and on a phone the link often tries to hand them over to the app. A contractor who wanted to see twelve kitchen photos ends up at a registration form.
A file has none of that. Send a PDF, one collage image or a folder of files, and the other person opens it in whatever they already have.
Start by deciding what they do with it
- Look and comment on a direction: send a PDF. It paginates, prints and attaches to an email.
- Glance at it in a chat: send one image. No download, no app, it just appears.
- Work with the material, as a builder, printer or designer would: send the ZIP, where every pin is its own file.
Everything below is made from one download with the PinBoardSaver extension, a Pinterest board downloader that runs in Chrome. Open the board, click “Start Download”, and the “ZIP Ready!” screen offers all three outputs.
Send it as a PDF
On the “ZIP Ready!” screen, click “Create PDF”. “Choose PDF Layout” has two options:
- “One per page” puts each image alone on a portrait page. Use it when someone has to judge single references, or when the file is going to a printer.
- “Collage” fills columns the way the board does and adds pages as they fill. Set “Columns” to 3 or 4 for a document people read on a laptop.
Turn on “Show pin names” before you generate: each image gets its name underneath, which gives your reader something to point at. “Kitchen, third image on page two” is a worse conversation than a caption.
The page size is always A4. If your reader prints on US Letter, tell them to choose “Fit to page” in the print dialog. The Pinterest-to-PDF guide covers the settings in more detail.
Send it as one image
“Export as Image” makes a single collage file. It is the right choice for WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or an email that should not carry an attachment people have to open.
Set “Columns” to 3 or 4, “Format” to JPG and “Width” to “Social (1080px)”, then click “Create Image”. A larger width is for printing, not for chat; a wide file in a messenger gets recompressed anyway.
Two columns and forty pins produce a very tall strip that messengers display as a thumbnail nobody can read. If that happens, add columns and generate again.
Send the files themselves
“Download to Device” saves the ZIP. Inside, each section of the board is a folder, pins outside sections sit in the root, and 0_info.txt records the board name, its URL, the owner and the export date.
Send the ZIP when the other person is going to use the images: a joiner matching a finish, a print shop, a designer assembling the layout. A PDF is a document; the ZIP is the material.
Which one to send
| They are | Send | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A client approving a direction | PDF, “Collage”, names on | Reads on a laptop, prints, attaches to the thread |
| A builder or a maker on site | PDF, “One per page” | One reference per page, readable on a phone |
| A friend or a group chat | One image | Opens instantly, nothing to download |
| A printer, a designer, a joiner | ZIP | They need the files, not a picture of them |
Keep the context attached
Whatever you send, say what you want back. “Does this feel calm enough?” gets a useful answer; “what do you think?” gets a polite one.
Keep the ZIP even when you only sent the PDF. Each file name carries the pin ID, so https://www.pinterest.com/pin/<id>/ opens the original pin, and that is how you answer “where is this from?” a month later. Before anything from the board goes into published work, check what you can do with images saved from Pinterest: a reference you share privately and an image you publish are different things.
FAQ
Can someone see my Pinterest board without an account?
A public board opens for them, but Pinterest prompts them to sign up while they look, and on a phone the link may push the app. A secret board does not open for anyone you have not invited to it, no matter what you send them.
Can I share a secret board with someone who is not on Pinterest?
Not as a link. Export the board to a PDF or an image and send that file: the content travels, the board stays secret.
What if the file is too big to email?
Use “Export as Image” at “Social (1080px)” for a chat, or put the PDF in a cloud folder and send the link. A large board as “One per page” makes a heavy PDF; “Collage” with 3 columns is usually a fraction of it.
Do they need the extension to open what I send?
No. A PDF, a JPG and a ZIP open with what their computer or phone already has. The extension is only needed on your side, once, to make the file.
